Nelson, W.J., Eggert, D.L., DiMichele, W.A. and Stecyk, A.C., 1985. Origin of discontinuities in coal-bearing strata at Roaring Creek (basal Pennsylvanian of Indiana). Int. J. Coal Geol, 4: 355—370. Basal Pennsylvanian coal-bearing strata exposed along Roaring Creek, west-central Indiana, exhibit extreme lateral discontinuity. Coal seams abruptly change in thickness and elevation; they split, grade into shale, are cut out by channels and disrupted by softsediment deformational structures. Initial sediments were laid down by a network of southwest-flowing streams that traversed a deeply channelized upland surface of Mississippian carbonate rocks. Channels aggraded rapidly as uplands were worn down, so the region changed through time from uplands to upper deltaic plain. Local environments included channels, localized point bars, small natural levees and crevasse splays, overbank deposits, and swamps. Differential compaction and subsidence, slumping stream banks, and possibly collapsing sinkholes influenced sedimentation. As a consequence, coals are too discontinuous for economical mining, although they are locally thick and high in quality.

Geochemistry and origin of elements of Upper Triassic Olang coal deposits in northeastern Iran
The Olang area is a part of Gheshlagh-Olang synclinal, which is a member of eastern Alborz coal basin and is situated at a distance of70 km northeast of Shahroud city. Coal-bearing strata of this region are part of the Shemshak group (Upper Triassic to Lower Jurassic).Samples from the 9 coal seams of the Olang coal deposits were collected and ashed. The aim of this study is to determine theoccu...

The biomass within two Early Pennsylvanian (Langsettian [Westphalian A] equivalent) penecontemporaneous swamp communities was sampled quantitatively to obtain an estimate of the taxonomic contribution to each assemblage. Blocks of organic-rich shale were removed from a clastic parting within the Black Creek Coal, and 0.5-m2 siltstone quadrats were chain-sawed from a clastic swamp community dire...

Structurally preserved vascular plants have recently been discovered in calcite petrifactions near the town of Shade, Ohio The florule includes representatives of all of the major groups of Carboniferous-age vascular plants, with members of the Calamitales and Marattiales appearing in the highest percentages. The relationships between the Shade coal-ball plants and other coal-ball floras in Nor...

The Markley Formation of north-central Texas is composed predominantly of terrestrial rocks that span the Pennsylvanian-Permian boundary. In superpositional order, basal paleosols evidence well drained but wet conditions and supp...
